We are delighted to announce the arrival of Glenn Souter, who becomes our First Team co-manager alongside Mark Curram, who returns to the club after a year away. They will be assisted by Craig Nagle and Jack Willis, who the club are delighted to retain for the upcoming season as first team coaches. Keen Ancell has been appointed as First Team GK coach.
Following Bill Clifford’s resignation, our priority was to find a management team who can build on the foundations laid, continuing the good work done by Bill over the past few seasons, as we look to challenge for promotion and go one better next season.
Chairman Mark Sanderson said, “Having received Bill’s resignation, we immediately identified continuity as our key objective when considering our next appointment. It feels like we have given ourselves the best chance of achieving success with the appointment of Mark and Glenn as First Team Co-Managers. We received lots of enquiries about the role but as soon as we received the proposal from Mark & Glenn, it felt like the perfect solution for our club.
Mark did an outstanding job with our U18’s previously and many of that same U18 team are now playing regularly for our first team. Therefore Mark is an ideal candidate to pick up where he left off a year ago, re-acquainting himself with the lads and pushing them on to the next level.
Glenn comes to us with a vast experience in local football. He is very well connected, and from our first meeting it felt like he alongside Mark are the perfect fit for our club. Glenn is confident that he can bring in quality in key areas to compliment our existing talent which excites me.
I look forward to working with them both in the seasons ahead which, I’m confident, will be successful ones”.
Having both played for various local clubs in the SCFL, ‘Cuzza’ and ‘Sooty’ understand what it takes to be successful in senior football.
They said, “We can not wait to get started! We both have strong links to the club with Glenn having played here both at youth and first team level and Mark more recently managing the very successful under 18 side who were crowned Southern Combination League Champions of Champions last season. We’ve been lucky to inherit a strong squad left by Bill and hopefully we can add to that squad with a bit more depth and experience.
Retaining Craig as Head Coach was key and we are delighted to have him on board alongside Jack who managed the under 23s last season.
Football in Worthing and the surrounding area is in a great place and we hope that we can bring an added buzz back to Lyons Way, taking United back to the top table of the Southern Combination League”.
We are currently planning our pre-season schedule and further details will be announced in due course.
Up the Mavs!
Worthing United Football Club has today been notified by first team manager, Bill Clifford, that he is standing down from his roles at the club. Bill’s resignation has been accepted by the club and the wheels will be set in motion to confirm our management arrangements for the 2025/26 season.
Bill first joined the Mavericks in 2017 as U23 manager before stepping into the Chairman’s role following Steve Taylor’s resignation in May 2018. Bill’s excellent organisational skills helped stabilise the club, and then to progress and improve on all fronts, with Bill overseeing some key successes on and off the pitch, particularly in terms of financial stability. He leaves the club in a strong position, with excellent links between our U18, U23 and first teams providing our best young players with a pathway into senior football, competing at the top end of the division.
Bill said, “Whilst I am disappointed that I have been unable to return the club to the Premier Division I am proud that I do at least leave behind a good team that are now promotion contenders.
As for the future, I turn 60 on Wednesday and it now feels like a good time to seek out fresh challenges.
A big thank you for your support and I wish the Club every success moving forwards and hopefully it will be third time lucky next season in making that promotion”.
Chairman Mark Sanderson thanks Bill for his time and dedication to the club, “Bill leaves with our very best wishes for the future, having steered us through some significant challenges both in footballing terms and as a volunteer-run organisation. He has shared his wisdom and past experiences in football which has benefitted us all, and we are in good shape looking ahead to next season.
Our primary objective now must be continuity, building on the foundations laid by Bill and planning ahead for next season as we look to push on and go one better in achieving promotion.
On a personal level, I am grateful to Bill for his efforts over the last 8 years and I wish him the very best for the future”.
We will make further announcements regarding our 2025/26 plans in due course.
